This program provides training and professional enrichment for people interested in becoming editors or already working as English language editors. The program imparts skills needed for the preparation of publication-quality texts for use in both print and electronic media.

Program Participants

The program is designed for individuals interested in developing and refining their editorial and text analysis skills for professional purposes and personal enrichment. Teachers, researchers, and other professionals have taken part in the program in order to enter the field of freelance editing or strengthen their professional skills.

Program Objectives

Emphasis is placed on:

1) achieving competency in text assessment and development, content and copy editing and proofreading and formatting.

2) enhancing English language skills (grammar, spelling, punctuation, composition and style).

3) acquiring analytical tools to assess and develop texts (editorial analysis).

Format

Class discussions, in-class and individual exercises, readings and homework are integral parts of the program. Knowledge acquired in the first semester is applied during the second semester through the preparation of publication-quality texts encompassing a full range of editorial functions.

Among the applied projects during the second semester is the preparation of "The 21st Century Text", a digital journal that will be entering its sixth year of publication. "The 21st Century Text" reports on developments and issues related to writing, editing and global English.

8 annual academic hours.

Admission Requirements

  1. BA or B Ed
  2. Highly proficient in spoken and written English
  3. Proficient in computer and technology skills, including word processing

Please note:

  • Candidates will be asked to participate in a personal interview.
  • Preference is given to candidates with experience in editing, writing, translation or related fields.

Diploma

Successful completion of the program will lead to a certificate from the David Yellin Academic College.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What does eight credit mean?
    There are four sessions offered per class day (Tuesdays, 09:00-15:45, with breaks), each consisting of two academic hours, hence 8 credit hours. This works out to approximately 204 academic hours of instruction over two semesters.
  2. Does the Editing Program give a teacher any points? Is it recognized by MoE?
    We have had many teachers among our students over the years. In the past, a number of participants have arranged gmul hishtalmut through their district supervisors. We are trying to achieve a similar arrangement with the MoE on a national basis but whether this will be completed before the coming academic year is uncertain. If you are interested in the program, you can try the individual approach previously used by students once you have been accepted to the Program.
  3. How can this course help a teacher professionally?
    Many of our graduates found the program useful in their teaching activities, especially in correcting exams and bagruot preparation. Others have enrolled because they sought to acquire professional editing skills as a means for supplementary income or as second careers, including after retirement.
